Unlocking Your Power Potential When Making a Swing
Every golfer would like to find more power in their swing, and most are capable of hitting the ball farther if they simply unlock all of their potential. Most amateur golfers have at least a couple errors in their swings which are robbing them of distance – and probably causing poor direction from time to time as well. Only when you get all of the parts of your swing working together properly can you really find out what kind of power you are capable of producing.
Take the following tips with you during your next practice session while looking to unlock that elusive extra power –
- Relax prior to the shot. Most golfers get so anxious and tense before they try to hit a long drive that they lock up their muscles and are unable to turn to their best of their ability. In fact, the opposite will allow you to hit your longest drives. Try to relax your muscles, take a deep breath, and let the swing that you have practiced do the work. Longer drives aren’t going to be found by trying to overpower the ball – rather, you can add to your distance by working on your technique and making great contact with the ball.
- Engage your core. The engine for your golf swing should be your core muscles, as they are the group that can help you unwind powerfully into the ball and accelerate the club. If you are trying to make power simply by rushing your arms down at the ball and using your hands to swipe through impact, you are going about it wrong. Thing about your core muscles being the center of all your power, and the arms and hands are just an extension that guides the club perfectly into the ball.
- Be confident. This last tip is not so much a physical one as it is a mental one. In order to maximize your distance potential, you need to feel confident in your swing and believe that you are going to hit a good shot. When doubt starts to creep into your mind, you get tentative – and being tentative will cost you swing speed, in addition to a range of other swing problems. Don’t let your doubts rob you of yards off the tee. Instead, feel good about yourself and your swing, and let the club rip through the ball on the way to a balanced finish position.
