How to Use a Golf Course Ball Washer
A large number of beginner golfers are surprised to learn there are many rules regarding cleaning golf balls. Some may not understand the significance of having a clean ball and it can help you play better. There are times you may not be allowed to clean your ball while playing on the course. Other times you may be allowed to use a towel to lightly wipe the ball when you have permission to do so.
When you are in between holes you may be able to use a ball washer to help thoroughly clean your ball. Since washers may vary depending on the course, be sure to follow directions and seek help if necessary. The following points can give some insight on how to properly use a golf course ball washer.
- Understand which type of ball washer you are using as there are two types: cart-mounted and post-mounted. They each have a fixed brush, manual plunger, and a reservoir filled with cleaning solution. The post-mounted type may have a towel attached.
- Pre clean the ball by wiping any debris on the surface before you place it in the solution. Doing this will help the ball get cleaner, but avoid using the towel that is present with the washer or the towel you intend to use to dry your ball. You should have a clean towel to use to wipe the ball clean; this helps the towel stay clean and prevent the ball from getting dirty again.
- Try to be observant of what is going on around you while using the ball washer. It is proper golf etiquette to wait until a player has taken there shot before using the washer to reduce the risk of being a distraction. In other words, make sure the tee box is not occupied. It helps to avoid using a cart-mounted washer when someone is within hearing range.
- The ball can be placed in the receptacle when you lift the plunger. You will then begin to push up and down with the ball in the place. When you go down the ball is coated with cleaning solution, the repeated up and down motion with the plunger helps the ball get brushed. You can repeat this until the ball looks clean. Take it out and use either the towel provided or one you have brought to use.
